Drive Hard (originally titled Hard Drive) is a 2014 Australian direct-to-video action buddy film directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith and written by Chad Law, Evan Law, and Smith. A professional thief (John Cusack) takes a former race car driver (Thomas Jane) hostage and forces him to drive his getaway car.
Former race car driver and American expatriate Peter Roberts has retired at the urging of his lawyer wife, though he resists getting an office job. Instead, he becomes an instructor at a driving school, while waiting for an investment opportunity to open a racing school. After he drops his daughter off to school and learns that he can no longer afford her private school tuition, he takes a fellow American as his first client. The man, Simon Keller, reveals that he has investigated Roberts' finances and personal life. Disturbed, Roberts insists on ending the lesson and returning to the school. Keller agrees but requests that they stop at a bank first, so that he can pay Roberts.
As Keller exits the bank, he opens fire on the guards, drops a bag into the car, and demands that Roberts serve as his getaway driver. Roberts protests in disbelief and attempts to surrender to the police, who open fire on him, too. Roberts reluctantly drives off and evades the police. Keller offers to share a percentage of his loot, but the panicked Roberts insists that he is now going to end up in jail. Keller assures him that the police will not pursue them, as the bank is owned and managed by a criminal syndicate with connections to the local police. Rossi, Keller's former associate, had previously betrayed him in the United States and then joined the Australian syndicate.
Rossi calls off the police and hires mercenaries to kill them. However, Agent Walker of the Australian Federal Police takes charge of the investigation over the objections of the corrupt Detective Chief Inspector Smith. Walker immediately threatens Rossi and Smith, both of whom she suspects to be part of the syndicate. Meanwhile, Keller and Roberts argue over Roberts' disappointment in his life, which Keller states is the result of giving up on his dreams. Upset, Roberts refuses to drive any further, and Keller shoots him with a rubber bullet. The two change cars, and Roberts once again becomes the reluctant driver.
Resigned to his fate as the getaway driver, Roberts offers to drive Keller to his final destination, a marina. On the way, the two reconcile their differences when both admit that the other has made good points about their respective lifestyles. When Roberts antagonizes a motorcycle gang, they become hostile and threaten to kill him. Keller saves his life, and, during the confrontation, the gang reveal themselves to be mercenaries in Rossi's pay. Roberts and Keller fight them off, only to be beset by Rossi himself and more mercenaries at the marina. Meanwhile, DCI Smith confronts Agent Walker, and Walker kills Smith in self-defense.
This movie has the heart of an 80s drive-in classic...and the soul of a broken Game Boy. This really should have been a fun, cheesy, grindhouse-inspired flick, but it's just too damn dull and slow, and tries too hard to be funny, to be of any entertainment. Not terrible, just.....exists.
Director Brian Trenchard-Smith has given us several underappreciated gems over the years such as BMX Bandits and Turkey Shoot, but in recent years he has either lost the passion, lost the opportunities or both as he's made nothing noteworthy since the 90's. At this time it looks like Drive Hard might be his last movie and based on what's here that's probably for the best.
Drive Flaccid. If the great Brian Trenchard-Smith made this in the 70's, it would've been high octane B-movie fun starring no name actors. Made in 2013 in Oz, it's the opposite, which results in pure VOD trash. Trenchard-Smith lost his bite. The car chases were limp. The score and soundtrack sound like a low rent video game. The photography is cable tv commercial quality.
At Backblaze, as of December 31, 2014, we had 41,213 disk drives spinning in our data center, storing all of the data for our unlimited backup service. That is up from 27,134 at the end of 2013. This year, most of the new drives are 4TB drives, and a few are the new 6TB drives.
We like every one of the 4TB drives we bought this year. For the price, you get a lot of storage, and the drive failure rates have been really low. The Seagate Desktop HDD.15 has had the best price, and we have a LOT of them. Over 12 thousand of them. The failure rate is a nice low 2.6% per year. Low price and reliability is good for business.

Drive Hard sees thief, Simon Keller (Cusack), arrive in a foreign country in need of a getaway driver. Rather than recruit one from the underworld, he takes a driving lesson from ex F-1 champion, Peter Roberts (Jane), now working as a driving instructor. After Keller robs a bank during the lesson, Roberts has no choice, but to use his driving talent to get away from pursuing police and mobsters.
Thanks for posting this information. I especially like the link to the pcc.edu/ecycle page with the pictures of the hard drive smashing machines created by students. Question: is this service only for currently enrolled students? Or are alumni encouraged to use the bins? I live close to the campus and it would be really convenient for me.
I using an SSD-less Mac Mini at work, and personally I'm waiting for OWC to offer an upgrade product before putting in a purchase request, to be more confident it will come with the complete set of screws, screwdrivers, documentation to minimize my downtime. If it was my own machine & my own time, I'd follow this thread closer and try picking up some parts off ebay etc.
It was just another day for former racing driver Peter Roberts (Thomas Jane) as his wife bemoaned him sinking their money in to a driving school which he runs not too successfully. But that all changes when he meets his client, Simon Keller (John Cusack), who dressed in black from head to toe doesn't seem too bothered about having a driving lesson or in truth need one. And it all becomes clear when Keller asks Roberts to pull over and he goes and robs a bank using Roberts as his getaway driver. Now the unlikely duo find themselves trying to evade not only the police but some machine gun toting heavies in SUVs.
I have an entertaining idea, a robber cons a former racing driver turned driving instructor into being a getaway driver during a driver lesson. Okay, then what? Well erm er erm we have some corrupt people within the banking organization and we have some odd couple humour as the driver and robber bicker. And what else? Well I suppose we can throw some twists in there where bad guys are good and so on but really the movie is all about the comedy of the odd couple. That is how I imagining it might have gone when the writer of "Drive Hard" presented the idea to a studio and in fairness on the proverbial paper the idea has legs but the end product... well it leaves a lot to be desired.
In the end "Drive Hard" seems to be the result of some wrong casting, Thomas Jane doesn't convince as a former driver or has the right chemistry with Cusack. But it is also a case that it tries too hard with John Cusack going over the top to make Keller quirky. And as for all the other stuff such as the sexy agent trying to track them down and the shady men in suits, well they are just filler.
