Lucysgotlegs: The Inspiring Story of a Paralyzed Woman Who Walks with an Exoskeleton
Lucy Dodd is a woman who has overcome incredible challenges in her life. She was diagnosed with a rare spinal condition called Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) when she was 19 years old, which caused her to become paralyzed from the waist down. For more than 15 years, she was confined to a wheelchair and had to rely on others for help.
But Lucy did not give up on her dreams of walking again. She learned about a device called ReWalk, which is a wearable robotic exoskeleton that enables people with spinal cord injuries to stand up and walk with crutches. She applied for a grant from a nonprofit organization called I GOT LEGS, which helps people with disabilities to access adaptive technology and sports. She was one of the lucky recipients of the grant and received her own ReWalk device in 2019.
Since then, Lucy has been walking with her exoskeleton, which she named Rodney, every day. She has walked over 100,000 steps and participated in several events and fundraisers to raise awareness and support for people with disabilities. She has also become an ambassador for I GOT LEGS and ReWalk, sharing her story and inspiring others to never give up.
Lucy's motto is "Lucy's GOT LEGS! Do You?" She wants to encourage everyone to appreciate their abilities and challenge themselves to achieve their goals. She is an example of how determination, courage, and technology can transform lives.
Lucy's journey with Rodney was not easy. She had to undergo rigorous training and testing to learn how to use the device safely and effectively. She also had to face many challenges and barriers in her environment, such as stairs, slopes, curbs, and uneven surfaces. But Lucy was determined to overcome these obstacles and make the most of her new opportunity.
Lucy's hard work paid off. She became one of the first people in the UK to receive a ReWalk Personal 6.0 System, thanks to a successful fundraising campaign that she launched with the help of a nonprofit organization called I GOT LEGS. The campaign, called Lucy's Legs, raised over £80,000 from various donors and supporters, including a sponsored abseil at Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.
Lucy is grateful for the generosity and kindness of everyone who contributed to her campaign. She is also thankful for the support and guidance of I GOT LEGS, a charity that helps people with disabilities to access adaptive technology and sports. I GOT LEGS was founded by Adam Gorlitsky, who is also a ReWalk user and an advocate for disability rights. He has walked over one million steps with his exoskeleton and has set several world records for walking events.
Lucy is now an ambassador for I GOT LEGS and ReWalk, spreading the word about the benefits of exoskeleton technology and inspiring others to pursue their dreams. She has participated in several events and fundraisers, such as the Wings for Life World Run, the Great South Run, and the London Marathon. She has also appeared on various media outlets, such as BBC News, ITV News, and The Sun.
Lucy hopes that her story will motivate others to never give up on their goals and to appreciate their abilities. She also hopes that exoskeleton technology will become more accessible and affordable for people who need it. She believes that everyone deserves a chance to stand up and walk again. aa16f39245
