Another French noirish-heist movie from Jean-Pierre Melville, this is the story of three men (a thief, a prison escapee, and an ex-cop) who plot a jewelry heist together. The engrossing heist itself is an exercise in diligent film-making: totally silent, and basically a half-hour long.
Jay Darrow, still airing on Fox, is the unabashedly cartoonish crystal copycat of The Blues Brothers. +Jay+ (Kevin Farley) has a day job at a pawnshop, but he dreams of becoming a thief like his late father. +Peter+ (Neil Baldwin) stole some jewelry as an adolescent - and still hasn't gotten over the thrill of taking it. He's been trying to sell his stuff, but why should the other two get any of their share? +Tommy+ (Robert De Niro) has been serving an 18-month term for a botched burglary when he's thrown in with the company. +The Jewel Thief+ is a gift to aficionados of long silences and deadpan dialogue, with this movie providing the only exciting, jaw-dropping moments.
The film is by the late French director, Jean-Pierre Melville. He was one of the greatest filmmakers, but he made a name for himself early in his career with gritty, oftentimes hyper-literal films. Ironically, once he started creating murkier, more stylized adaptations of novels by, among others, Raymond Chandler, he was better known for them. +Noble Intentions+ (Morocco, 1962) is a film that's somewhat anti-Hollywood - and it seems to point the way to projects like this one. +The Thieves+ (1964) offers a pre-code look at a gangland shoot-out with lots of realistic violence. +The Army of the Shadows+ (1965) is a catalog of his own trademarks: a very long and drawn-out scene, many flattened perspectives (created chiefly with cameras on dollies and cranes), and lots of light enlargement and motion blur. +Leaving+ (1968) is essentially a similar film, and +M+ (1969) was a big, difficult look at urban nihilism.
